IVF questions most couples are too shy to ask
How many cycles? What does it cost? Is the failure my fault? Common questions couples ask in private.
1. Will it work? IVF success depends on age, egg reserve, sperm parameters, embryo quality, uterus health and previous treatment history. Your doctor will explain the likely range after evaluation.
2. How much will it cost? Cost varies by medicines, stimulation response, lab procedures, freezing and transfer plan. Ask for a written estimate before starting the cycle.
3. Is the infertility my fault? Infertility can involve the male partner, female partner, both partners or no clear cause despite testing. It is a medical condition, not a moral failure.
4. Will my child be different? IVF is a method of fertilisation. Your fertility doctor will explain the medical evidence, pregnancy monitoring and any case-specific risk.
5. How many embryos will you transfer? The number depends on age, embryo quality, previous cycles and safety. The goal is a healthy pregnancy, not simply a higher number of embryos.
6. What's the difference between IVF, IUI, ICSI? IUI is simplest — sperm placed in the uterus. IVF involves egg retrieval and fertilisation outside the body. ICSI is IVF where one sperm is injected into one egg, used for severe male factor.
7. How private is it? Fertility treatment is handled with discretion. Ask the team how reports, calls and appointments will be managed if privacy is a concern.
